Investigating the missing discourse of violence in environmental education

Dr. Kool received a Research and Professional Development grant to examine the field of environmental education as response to violence committed against nature using a lens of non-violence.

Environmental education (EE) is a field that, in some ways, is a response to violence committed against nature and humans, and yet the term violence virtually never appears in its published literature. This presentation at the North American Association for Environmental Education will offer an analysis of environmental violence through the philosophical lenses of Hannah Arendt, Paul Ricoeur and Zygmund Bauman, and offer ideas for practitioner action that can confront environmental violence through environmental non-violence, anti-violence and contra-violence.
