Get to know your industry

Level up your career management strategy by exploring and understanding the industry you're interested in through targeted industry research.

Spend time learning about relevant occupations, councils and associations, company information, and industry-specific language and terminology.

Conducting labour market research early in your career planning or transition process will give you a deeper, richer understanding of your industry.

First steps of labour market research

You may be already be conducting labour market research without realizing it. Here are the first steps to consider.

Read

Search online news and articles by starting with companies or titles you are interested in; read job postings; take note of skills, experience and connections that are in demand.

Connect

Make connections! Ask some of your current connections for a coffee to listen and learn about their career path, ask for referrals to meet new people, and take note of new ideas and opportunities.

Volunteer

Strategic volunteer work will help you develop skills, meet people in the community and discover new opportunities. Most cities have community centres or not-for-profit organizations (like Volunteer Victoria) to connect keen volunteers to their passions and areas of interests.
