Witnessing Wildfire – Visual Interpretations
Dr. Slick used Research for Professional Development funds to examine how socio-technical practices associated with the use of videos and social media are changing how disasters are being witnessed.
Citizen-generated still and video imagery of personal experiences with disaster are now part of our visual culture. My research examines how socio-technical practices associated with the use of video recording technological and different social media platforms are changing how disasters are being witnessed. Further, in addition to traditional dissemination of findings in academic journals, I use painting as research method to generate visual representations of my interpretation of the essence of these experiences as portrayed on video.
