What’s in a Frame? Communication in a Polarized, ‘Changing’ Climate

Dr. Takach received Internal Grant for Research funds to continue research into the communication of ‘climate’ in a polarized space and its implications for urgent environmental concerns.

Blending framing analysis, critical discourse analysis and arts-based research, this research builds on earlier, initial research, presented at virtual Congress 2020 to interrogate the rising controversy over the positioning of ‘climate’ in public discourse. I will further explore (1) How has ‘climate’ been termed in Canadian corporate and alternate media? (2) Through what frames can we analyze those communications? and (3) What implications and lessons arise for those seeking depolarized dialogue—and ultimately, action—on climate change/crisis/etc. and other formidable and urgent environmental concerns facing Canada and the world today?
