Visualizing Disaster Experience
Dr. Slick was granted Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council funds to research lived experiences and use of video during disasters using phenomenological and visual research methods.
This research seeks to advance practice in using phenomenological and visual research methods for studying citizen generated videos in disaster contexts. Building on previous research that examined YouTube videos of experiences with the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire, this new study will examine videos of one other wildfire and one flood allowing for comparison of the use of video and lived experiences across hazard type and context. This research contributes to knowledge about social media use in disaster contexts in Canada, as well as methodology and methods for analyzing YouTube videos.
