Understanding and Maximizing Cohort Learning
Dr. Manion was awarded Buttedahl and Skene Learning and Teaching Innovation Funds to explore the benefits and challenges of the cohort model, specifically on ways to maximize efficiency.
Royal Roads University has long since used a cohort model yet little research exists on the efficacy of this approach or how to optimize it. The Learning, Teaching and Research Model articulates a ‘community-based learning’ and ‘co-creative’ model to encompass a wider range of student experiences, yet many programs still use cohort-based models. Anecdotally, many benefits and challenges exist. With staff, faculty and students, this research explores the benefits and challenges of this model and ways to maximize the effectiveness. It aims to benefit students and instructors through the creation of a fact sheet and summary research report.
