The Sport We Want – cultivating leaders, and leadership models and practices to build quality sport in Canada post COVID-19

Dr. Walinga was granted Internal Grant for Research funds to research the potential for human and social development from sport and whys to address decreasing participation.

I am conducting several research projects on leadership development, governance and communication in the Canadian sport system. The purpose of sport is human and social development. Sport can therefore be leveraged as a mechanism for education. Currently, sport is suffering from a variety of ailments that are causing participation rates to drop. With decreasing participation and support for sport, Canada loses the potential for human and social development. This research will explore ways that leadership development and structures can be embedded in sport systems and delivery to offer better quality and therefore more engaging sport experiences.
