Situating Public Relations History: Northern BC

Dr. McKendry used an Internal Grant for Research for a project that examines the gender/race/class matters with in public relations in the context of rural and small-town northern British Columbia.

This trip to Prince George will allow us to forge a research relationship with a community of public relations practitioners who work in rural and small-town northern British Columbia, and particularly the gendered dimensions of individual careers trajectories. It complements our pilot study on the pioneering women in public relations in Victoria, BC, and our key finding that gender/race/class matters differently according to where and when those careers unfolded. Meeting the executive members of CPRS-Northern Lights, a professional association for PR professionals working in BC’s rural north, will allow us to use a snowball sampling method and talk to participants able and willing to help us understand the challenges and opportunities they face, and how they are different and similar to those faced by practitioners in urban centres.
