Kate Butler is a researcher, non-profit leader and advocate for the rights of children and youth. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Victoria, and a MA from Toronto Metropolitan University. 

Kate has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed books, academic book chapters and research reports for non-profit organizations, and has worked in children’s rights for non-profits in Canada and globally.

Experience

Kate is a recognized expert in human and children’s rights in Canada and internationally, in particular children’s rights under international instruments. She has more than 15 years’ experience developing policy, programming and other initiatives focused on the application of child rights and improving outcomes for children. 

She is the current president of the Canadian Coalition for the Rights of Children, as well as an associate with the International Institute for Child Rights and Development.
