Pathways to Cognitive Wellness
With funding from the Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation, Pathways to Cognitive Wellness investigates lifestyle changes essential for reducing dementia risk.
Pathways to Cognitive Wellness addresses the challenge of sustaining lifestyle changes essential for reducing dementia risk. Nearly 50% of dementia cases are attributable to modifiable risk factors (Livingston et al., 2024), yet maintaining long-term behavioral changes remains difficult for many individuals. Our innovative solution integrates Indigenous protective factors, Lifestyle Medicine principles, and controlled psilocybin use, offering a comprehensive, culturally sensitive approach to brain health.
Based on our team's knowledge synthesis (Haigh et al., 2023), a rich literature base and experience, and focus groups, the first phase of funding is for prototype development of an innovative 12-week online course and will be operationally prepared for a trial.
The program will ultimately operate through a 12-week intensive course with ongoing support.
Key features include:
• Online Technology-based Course Platform with Ongoing Support
• Assessment of Individual Physical, Cognitive, and Lifestyle Factors.
• Indigenous Wisdom Integration: Online group sessions incorporating traditional practices emphasizing land connection, spirituality and community bonds.
• Lifestyle Medicine Implementation: Guidance on nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management, social connections, and substance avoidance.
• Psilocybin Ceremony: A carefully controlled session to promote neuroplasticity and behavioral change.
• Group Support: Regular meetings fostering community and shared learning.
• Cultural Competency: Program designed with cultural sensitivity and adaptability.
This multifaceted approach ensures a holistic, culturally appropriate, and scientifically grounded method for reducing dementia risk and promoting brain health.
