Paleoseismic History of the West Coast of Vancouver island: Technician Salary support for marine sediment data processing and figure production

Dr. Dallimore used Internal Grant for Research funds for a study on the paleoseismic history of Vancouver Island to aid in the sustainable community planning of the BC coast.

For the past ten years I have been working on the Paleoseismic History of the West Coast of Vancouver Island research project, with my collaborators from the Geological Survey of Canada- Pacific, and American collaborators from the University of Oregon. We have developed the methodology of identifying past great earthquakes along the Canadian region of the Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ) from our marine sediment core records from every coastal inlet along the West Coast of Vancouver Island and the south central mainland coast. We have now almost completed this work which will for the first time in the literature, extend our knowledge of the nature, timing and frequency of great (M8 +) earthquakes, along the Canadian portion of the CSZ. This work is vital for sustainable community planning for major seismic events along the BC coast and has contributed to BC Building Code revisions.
