A student heard a tiny peep down a campus drain…

It’s common to hear the cries of peacocks on Royal Roads University’s campus.

But this one was different.

Master of Arts in Leadership student Niall Kelly heard the tiny ‘peep! peep! peep!’ early one morning as he was heading into Habitat Café.

“I figured out what it was right away,” says the Calgarian and Bachelor of Commerce in Entrepreneurial Management alum, who is on campus for a two-week residency.

He squeezed through some trees to access a metal drain trap near the entrance to the café. He popped off the slatted metal cover and gently retrieved a stranded peachick.

While a little scared from the ordeal, Kelly says it seemed happy to be free as it scurried away.

“An adult came by,” Kelly says. “I don’t even think it was its mother, but it seemed to round it up.”

The peachick sustained no apparent injuries. As for Kelly, he scuffed up both his shirt and hand in the process. But he’d do it again, without hesitation.

“It’s a simple thing. You see an animal in distress. How can you not help?”
