RRU POCKET CLASS: How listening drives climate action

Dr. Robin Cox has a PhD and more than 30 publications, but when it comes to her research, she says the real experts are the people she listens to.

“Climate change is driving more natural hazards, hitting marginalized communities the hardest,” says Cox, director of Royal Roads’ Resilience by Design (RbD) Research lab and program head for the graduate programs in Climate Action Leadership. “But those most affected are also best positioned to design and lead solutions. Participatory research amplifies their voices to create real change.”

Cox, who also teaches in the Disaster and Emergency Management programs, says solutions go beyond technological or political fixes. They’re about people.

“When we empower communities to co-create solutions, they become agents of change – tackling problems that are important to them, in their lives, in their homes,” she says.
