President Steenkamp: My three top tips for every leader

Leadership is often associated with titles and high-stakes decisions, but true leadership extends far beyond positions of authority. At its core, leadership is about adaptability, empathy and the courage to make decisions that benefit the greater good. Whether you're a student, professional or someone in a position of influence, you have the potential to lead in your own unique way.

Here are some insights that have shaped my leadership journey.

Embrace creativity

In today’s fast-paced world, creativity is no longer just a luxury. It’s a necessity. The challenges we face — whether in our careers, personal lives or communities — demand fresh thinking and innovative solutions. We must embrace creativity not only as a tool for problem-solving but also as a means to inspire those around us. Leadership is about creating environments where thinking outside the box is encouraged, boundaries are pushed and new possibilities are explored.

Exercise good judgment

Effective leaders make swift and informed decisions, often under pressure. Good judgment isn’t just about making the right choice; it’s about knowing when and how to act. We must trust our instincts, prioritize wisely, and understand that leadership involves making the best decisions we can with the information we have. Navigating complex situations with clarity and confidence is what sets great leaders apart.

Follow through and make it happen

Ideas are important, but execution is what brings them to life. Leadership is not about making promises — it’s about delivering on them. Leaders transform ideas into action and consistently follow through on their commitments. This builds trust, creates lasting impact and motivates others to do the same. True leadership lies in the consistent effort to turn vision into reality.

Advice for emerging leaders

I encourage you to raise your hand. Don’t shy away from the tough challenges, because it’s through the hardest tasks that we grow the most. When I was starting out, I volunteered for everything — even when others hesitated. Taking on challenges, no matter how daunting, is an opportunity to learn, develop and make a meaningful difference.

Leadership is about turning big ideas into tangible outcomes. It’s about having the creativity to inspire, the judgment to act and the determination to follow through. The world needs leaders who inspire action, drive change and work to build a better future for all.
