Conflict and human security expert Prof. Kenneth Christie appeared on CFAX 1070 to discuss the present situation in Afghanistan, the taking of Kabul by the Taliban, and a history of the country’s conflicts.
Here’s an excerpt:
“Afghanistan is a crossroads, surrounded by various countries, like Iran, like India, like Pakistan. They all have a game going on in Afghanistan, because they all have trade routes going through Afghanistan that are crucial to those countries’ needs… so Afghanistan is kind of cursed by its geography. There have been a lot of invasions, trying to take over, trying to make sure things go the way the colonial great powers wanted it to go. And of course, each have failed as the Afghans are fiercely independent… and now you have this very organized group, the Taliban, who feel entitled to impose these extreme measures on the Afghan people. It’s a disaster, it’s truly a disaster.”
