Mutual Funds Dealers Association Enforcement Performance: Are Penalties Proportionate to Offences?

Dr. Lokanan was awarded Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Institutional Grant for a project exploring the performance of self-regulatory organization of Canadian Mutual Fund Dealers.

The proposed project will look at the enforcement performance of the Mutual Fund Dealers Association of Canada (MFDA). The MFDA is the national self-regulatory organization (SRO) that is responsible for regulating the operations and business conduct of its dealer members and their registered representatives. Data for the project will come from completed MFDA’s cases and will be analyzed for trends in enforcement. Given the call by the provincial securities commissions and public interests groups to strengthen investors’ protection in Canada, it is difficult not to see the findings being used by legislators in Ottawa to inform public policies.
