Local food systems and short value chains as pathways to rural development: Insights from Bolivian Aquaculture

Dr. Irwin used an Internal Grant for Research for a project examining the case of Bolivian aquaculture to uncover pathways to a more sustainable food future.

The world faces a daunting challenge: in 2050, the global population will be almost 10 billion, and 50% more food will be needed to meet demand, particularly from the global South (WRI, 2019). Complicating this challenge is the need to reduce the food system’s environmental impact and improve its contribution to poverty alleviation. Research that uncovers pathways to a more sustainable food future is therefore needed.
