H5P Online Content for ‘Introduction to Tourism and Hospitality in BC’ Textbook
Wilson-Mah et al. received BCcampus funds to develop engaging online learning activities in H5P that are embedded in each chapter of the open textbook ‘Introduction to Tourism and Hospitality in BC.’
Coordinated by Rebecca Wilson-Mah, Royal Roads University, the applicants are from five BC post-secondary institutions: Capilano University, College of the Rockies, Royal Roads University, Selkirk College and Thompson Rivers University.
The project supports the creation of activities in H5P for each of the 12 chapters in the open textbook 'Introduction to Tourism and Hospitality in BC'. The applicants for this grant will develop formative activities using different H5P content types. The content type choices will be made to support the learning objectives currently identified by each educator participating in this project.
Some of the interactive H5P content types include audio recorder, essay, fill in the blanks, find the words, multiple choice, quiz and true/false question and timeline. Each chapter in the open textbook currently includes case study examples and review exercises. This content will be enhanced by moving it into the H5P platform, considering pedagogical practices such as incorporating spaced practice throughout the content of the text, retrieval activities and enhancing visual imagery. Further opportunities include enhancing the concrete examples currently included in each chapter with the addition of H5P content, for example, audio recorder.
The team members all share a commitment to learn and apply H5P content with a view to continuing to use H5P on their LMS platforms after this project ends. The team members are all tourism and hospitality educators within BC’s post-secondary education system.
An instructional designer and educational technologist from RRU will coordinate their support for H5P in collaboration with BCcampus. Special support will be provided to leverage the interaction and media components available in H5P content.
