Good Sport: Piloting a leadership through sport framework and curriculum with local sport institutes
Dr. Walinga was awarded a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council grant to examine the potential power of sport in Canada and to improve leadership behaviours within sport.
While in 2008, 85% of Canadians believed that sport participation contributes to the economic, physical, cultural, and leadership health and development of youth and the broader community (Mulholland, 2008), less than 20% believe the power of sport has been realized, and media representation of cheating, corruption, abuse, and violence in sport is affecting participation levels by negatively impacting the reputation and appeal of sport (CCES, 2011). This study asks “How can we foster better leadership behaviours within sport in order to better mobilize the power and potential of sport in Canada?”
