Gender, Displacement and Human Security

Dr. Christie was granted Research and Professional Development funds for a research paper examining migrants and refugees from the context of gender and human security.

This paper/panel focuses on the gender and human security aspects in the Mediterranean/MENA and the implications for migrants and refugees in this troubled region. Since the Arab uprisings of 2010/2011, we have seen major political transformations. Displaced populations continue to suffer due to these conflicts in the region, causing fragmentation and dis-integration of communities. The paper/panel analyzes how and why this crisis differs significantly from previous migration/refugee flows in the region, explain the historical and political antecedents of this crisis and explore the relationship between human security and the protection of vulnerable individuals and groups focusing on women and children.
