Join scholar and educator Jasmine Feather Dionne for an engaging and thought-provoking discussion about the links between colonialism, capitalism, and climate change.

During this one-hour, in-person session, we will share video excerpts from US activist, educator and writer Ericka Hart about these complex and intertwined topics. Jasmine will connect historical colonial events to contemporary settler colonial structures that have contributed to and maintain the climate crisis. We anticipate this will feed into a rousing yet respectful discussion circle that will help shift narratives that see climate change as something separate from the oppressive structures of capitalism and colonialism.

More about the session facilitator

Jasmine is a Cree and Metis scholar from nistawoyou (Fort McMurray, Alberta) and studies the relationships between the extractive industry and the MMIW2s+ crisis in their home territory. Jasmine analyzes the missing and murdered crisis from an Indigenous feminist, sex-positive, intersectional, and anti-colonial position by highlighting the community care, care ethics, and care politics of Cree, Dene, and Metis nations in northeastern Alberta.

Jasmine is completing their PhD at the University of Victoria where their work has been awarded both a Trudeau and Vanier Scholarship.
