The Dr. Paz Buttedahl Bursary for Peace and Regenerative Culture was established in her memory by friends, family, colleagues and students. In describing human security, Paz said, "Human security means the freedom to live without fear. It isn't just about stopping wars; it's about addressing the structural problems within society that prevent equality. Those can include governance, sustainability, community building, and above all, respect for human rights."
The award will be presented annually to a graduate student of the School of Humanitarian Studies. Applicants must demonstrate an ability to explore issues of peace and justice, with a particular focus on capacity building; social protection systems building in failed or failing states and/or child rights implementation, monitoring and evaluation. The recipient will undertake the consideration of practical structures and process that will contribute to the establishment of sustainable peace and security, and publish results and recommendations that may take the form of one or more of the following: journal/popular press articles, inter-disciplinary social science forums; artistic expression, or innovative Internet applications that foster wide and deep public discussion within one year of the award.
