Development of resources to promote child rights in Mother Tongue in Uganda
Dr. Jones received an RRU Internal Grant for Research to explore how child rights-based lessons and resources developed by the IICRD can be adapted by experienced Ugandan educators.
Research conducted in Canada and Uganda by Manion and Jones (2020) found that children were keen and able to engage in rights-focused discussions and activities with relevant, age- and culturally-appropriate pedagogy and resources. This follow-up project will explore how child rights-based lessons and resources developed by the International Institute for Child Rights and Development (IICRD) can be adapted – e.g., linguistically, culturally, materially – by experienced Ugandan educators in two diverse Ugandan locations, to most effectively engage the children they teach. Materials generated will be analyzed to learn the most effective ways to develop authentic child-centered rights-based educational materials, respecting heterogeneous contexts.
