Introduces foundational concepts relating to Indigenous peoples and perspectives in what is commonly called Canada in the context of communication, historical narratives, and cultural studies. Rooted in a framework of social, economic, and environmental justice, this course embraces: exploring Indigenous histories and cultures; practising relational accountability; centering Indigenous subjectivities and situating settlers as privileged, allying visitors; addressing privilege; transforming stereotypical representations of Indigenous people and cultures in media; and designing ethical Indigenous and settler intercultural communication, rooted in Indigenous epistemologies and pedagogies.
