Children and Images- Humanitarian Perspectives
Dr. Manion was awarded a Research and Professional Development grant for a research project that explores the human security of children migrants using a gender lens.
Children are significantly impacted by armed conflict yet have little voice to redress their particular vulnerabilities. Children make up almost a third of forced migrants globally (UNICEF, 2016). While the impact on individual children is variable, it is gendered. Males often garner more attention, but girls are significantly impacted and are more likely to experience violence within the private sphere during violent periods. There has been a more gendered focus on humanitarian interventions and an increased focus on youth perspectives in humanitarian situations. This opens the door to highlight the perspectives of girl children in promoting human security.
