Attendance at 25th International Conference on the Learner: Education in a Time of Austerity and Social Turbulence

Dr. Young received a Research and Professional Development grant for a presentation on the facilitation of an institution based Inside-Out model of prison education at William Head Institution.

In July 2017, the author approached the Manager of Programs at William Head Institution (WHI), located outside of Victoria, BC, with a proposal to teach a course inside the institution based on the Inside-Out model of prison education. This presentation outlines the steps taken to facilitate teaching the course to inside students of WHI and outside students enrolled in the BA Justice Studies program at Royal Roads University (RRU). The presentation begins with a discussion on the initial approval process for both WHI and RRU, which was followed by the subsequent development of a formal proposal for the course offering. The discussion then shifts to the process used to select inside and outside students for the course. Next, the course selected for the program, and the revisions undertaken to adapt the course are identified. The presentation concludes with observations on the application of Inside-Out principles to the prion’s learning environment and the identification of the success and challenges experienced thus far in the program, which is scheduled to end in April.
