Adapting NORSEACC to COVID-19
Dr. King was awarded an Internal Grant for Research to add Vancouver Island to a new case study examining coastal communities as apart of a larger sustainability research project.
This research proposal aims to adapt the Northern Knowledge for Resilience, Sustainable Environments and Adaptation in Coastal Communities (NORSEACC) project to the restrictions and opportunities of COVID 19. For the NORSEACC project we planned to complete case studies of coastal communities who have experimented with innovative adaptive responses to rapid environmental and social change in Canada, Orkney, Iceland and Norway. While field work has been substantially completed in Iceland and Orkney, we propose a new case study of Vancouver Island to replace both Norway and Haida Gwaii. While this is in part due to travel restrictions, it also aims to take advantage of the opportunity that Vancouver Island, Iceland and Orkney present by having relatively successfully adapted to COVIC-19 and engaged in “green recovery” initiatives.
