Student Research: John Rimell-Project-Related Decision Making in Healthcare: An Appreciative Inquiry Research Project.

We asked John a few questions about this research, and this is what he said:
What are some key takeaways from your thesis that would be helpful for other leaders?
In terms of writing a thesis, trust the process and ask clarifying questions. At the beginning, the entire process might feel overwhelming and the pathway to reach the endpoint may seem blurry. As you continue through the process, day by day, and chip away at each piece, the entire system begins to fall into place and the pathway becomes much clearer. Additionally, it is up to you to keep the process moving forward, so tackle tasks each day to ensure you remain focused and have that accomplished feeling.
How is the organization moving change forward based on your work?
I haven’t implemented the change quite yet within my organization, as I completed the thesis one month ago. However, this research will be valid within any health care organization making decisions, both big and small. My plans remain to meet with various teams within my organization to discuss the outcomes of my research.
What surprised you about your experience of the thesis process?
Before the program started, I was told by alumni that friendships would be made that would last a lifetime. I was hesitant to believe this, as my experience with post-secondary schooling was different. However, I can say, my biggest surprise is the true friendships that have been made that I expect will last a lifetime. From the many WhatsApp calls and texts with classmates of trying to brainstorm how to complete work, to the many laughs that were shared in residency, I have made great friends.
How are you applying lessons learned from your whole MA-Leadership journey?
One of the lessons that I learned from this experience was the importance of reflection. I am applying this lesson every single day. Taking time throughout the day to reflect, even if it just regarding a response to an email, or reflecting at the end of the day on what went well and what could’ve gone better, reflection is critical. This program taught me how important reflection is and this will be a lesson I take forward for the rest of my life, truly life changing.
