For students interested in developing their capacity to influence change and create an environment that facilitates student learning, but are not able to pursue a full master’s level course load at this time, the Graduate Diploma in Higher Education Administration and Leadership is an ideal solution. This 18-credit program is delivered through our blended learning model, comprised of four online courses with a mandatory two-week, on-campus residency.

Students interested in developing their focus on leadership in the global context may be interested in the Specialization in International Education.

Who It’s For

This diploma program was created to enable current or aspiring leaders interested in developing their leadership ability to advance their higher education skills and knowledge and effectively influence change while supporting growth in student learning. For leaders seeking to develop their plans for internationalization, the specialization in International Education is available.

The standard admission requirements for this graduate diploma include completion of a four-year (or comparable) Education, Arts, Science of other undergraduate degree in a related field from a post secondary institution, and a minimum of five years of paid work experience within the higher education sector, including leadership experience.

The Flexible Admissions Process at Royal Roads University may be appropriate for students lacking the formal academic requirements, but have extensive work experience in the higher education sector.


Once you’ve completed the Graduate Diploma in Higher Education Administration and Leadership, you will have demonstrated competency across a variety of essential leadership requirements. Your awareness and understanding of core educational improvement concepts and research requirements will enable you to address current concerns, challenges, and opportunities relevant to institutional growth and facilitating student achievement.

Working with a cohort of colleagues from across Canada and the globe you will have the opportunity and resources to further develop your skills to communicate effectively and professionally.  You will be exposed to different theories and approaches that inform leadership and you will reflect on your own leadership abilities.

If you opt to complete the Systems Leadership stream you will complete the program having learned to use a systems thinking approach effectively to lead a team and to affect change within an institution.  If you opt to complete the International Education stream you will have had the opportunity to develop your knowledge of working within an international context and how to successfully apply key  business skills for the effective development and sustainability of international education initiatives.
