Thais Amorim teaches in the Bachelor of Arts in Justice Studies program. She received an LL.B in Brazil in 2008 and has used the law and her passion for advancing human rights and social justice as the backbone of her scholarly and advocacy work.
Her area of expertise is the intersection of law, and child and youth wellbeing. More specifically, she strives to unpack how judicial decision-making impacts the livelihoods of disenfranchised teenagers in the youth criminal justice system.
As part of her doctoral research, Amorim is currently working on a transcontinental project that assesses the social and structural issues young mothers face in Uganda, emphasizing adolescent sexual health and reproductive rights.
Experience
Amorim currently holds an undergraduate sessional instructor position at the School of Child and Youth Care at the University of Victoria. She teaches various courses, including child and youth mental health and diverse abilities, research methods and counselling skills.
She also coordinates a graduate interdisciplinary research internship course where she supports the relationship between the university, students, the Ministry of Children and Family Development, the BC Office of the Representative for Children and Youth, and community agencies.
Previously, Amorim held a limited-term professorship at Vancouver Island University (Nanaimo campus) in the Faculty of Health and Human Services. She taught courses on relational youth work, research methods, child and youth mental health, working with families, and law in the Bachelor of Child and Youth Care program.
She also supervised the Child Protection practicum with the Ministry of Child and Family Development central and north island regional offices and Delegated Aboriginal Agencies, which focused on applying the BC Child, Family, Community Service Act and protection policies to real-life welfare cases.
