As part of his Master of Global Management Alejandro Balarezo did an internship with The Wilson’s Group of Companies, where he works as a junior dispatcher for the company’s fleet.

The eight-month experience provided Balarezo with insights that dovetailed nicely with his global studies.  As his first experience working in a Canadian company, he not only learned about workplace culture and business practices in Canada, but was also exposed to a wide variety of international perspectives.

“The Wilson’s Group has a diverse and multicultural team,” Balarezo says, “which allowed me to interact with colleagues from countries such as Mexico, the Philippines, and Germany, further enriching my learning experience."

Working closely with his supervisor, Victoria Operations Manager Chelsea Crowther, was another highlight of Balarezo's experience. “Since we shared the same workspace, I could easily reach out to her for guidance, and she was always available to provide support," he says. “I want to express my special gratitude to Chelsea, Trevor, Sigrid, Linda, Tim, and The Wilson's Group for being part of my career development!”

Indeed, the team at The Wilson’s Group – who embraced Balarezo and made him feel welcomed and part of the group from the moment he joined – is a standout aspect of his internship experience.

“What I enjoyed most was the team environment—where we could work efficiently while also sharing moments of laughter and camaraderie," he says. "The workplace fostered open discussions, knowledge-sharing, and collaboration, making even busy days enjoyable. There was always time to focus on our responsibilities, but also moments to connect, exchange ideas, and support one another.”

That support was evident in The Wilson’s Group adopting Balarezo's recommendations for process improvements by adopting cloud-based, collaborative tools such as Google doc to increase efficiency. He was inspired to suggest the change by applying his learning from his Managing Change in a Global Context course which “was especially useful in understanding how Wilson’s Group, as a dynamic and flexible company, continuously adapts to changing demands and uses its resources efficiently.

"Overall, I believe this internship is an excellent opportunity for any student looking to gain industry knowledge, apply classroom learning to real-world business operations, and understand the human aspect of running a company,” says Balarezo.

The RRU Internship Employer of the Year is awarded annually in recognition of providing a valuable learning experience to one or more students.
