Royal Roads University is mourning the passing of Dr. Stanley Kwok, a celebrated architect, urban planner, and city builder whose influence shaped communities across British Columbia and beyond. Kwok, an Honorary Degree recipient and former director of the Royal Roads University Foundation, passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and generosity.

Kwok was widely recognized for his transformative work on Vancouver’s False Creek, Whistler Resort, and Victoria’s Inner Harbour. His career spanned continents, beginning in Hong Kong where he designed more than 200 buildings, served as president of the Hong Kong Society of Architects, and taught at the University of Hong Kong. In 1968, amid political unrest, Kwok moved his family to Canada, where his vision continued to flourish.

In Vancouver, Kwok co-founded Canadian Freehold Properties in 1970, overseeing landmark developments including Victoria’s Inn at Laurel Point. Later, as president of British Columbia Place Ltd., he led the planning for the north shore of False Creek, a project that would redefine Vancouver’s waterfront.

Royal Roads University awarded Kwok an honorary degree, honoris causa, at Spring 2012 Convocation to express gratitude for Kwok’s contributions, noting that his support embodied values of generosity, connection, and care for community were evident throughout his time serving the university in various capacities.

Kwok’s life’s work stands as a testament to visionary leadership and enduring impact. His contributions will continue to shape communities for generations.

A private family service will be held.
