Canada urgently needs a national drone strategy to keep pace with rapid technological change, says Christopher Collins, a Polycrisis fellow at the Cascade Institute at Royal Roads. He and co-author Jonathan Berkshire Miller state in a new opinion piece for The Globe and Mail that recent strikes in Ukraine are proof of drones’ transformative role in modern warfare.

The authors write:

“At a time when interest and commitment to Canada’s malnourished defence ecosystem is getting unprecedented attention by government, a comprehensive Canadian drone capability could provide both military and civilian benefits.”

They also write that allies are investing heavily in drone and counter-drone systems, creating both competitive pressure and opportunity.
