A rewarding journey: Royal Roads University’s 46th convocation ceremonies

More than 650 new Royal Roads University graduates are set to celebrate a milestone in their journey of lifelong learning at Fall Convocation at the Royal Theatre Nov. 7.

The university’s 46th convocation will confer degrees, certificates or diplomas in the Faculty of Management, the Faculty of Social and Applied Sciences and the College of Interdisciplinary Studies. 

“There is nothing quite like Royal Roads University anywhere in the world, and to the new graduates I would say there is no one else quite like you,” says President and Vice-Chancellor Philip Steenkamp. “Convocation is a remarkable testimony to your hard work and conviction that what you are doing here is life changing.”

M’akola Housing Society to receive Chancellor’s Community Recognition Award

Royal Roads Chancellor and Chair of the Board of Governors Kathleen Birney will present the Chancellor's Community Recognition Award to M’akola Housing Society for its significant contributions to affordable and safe housing throughout BC, primarily for Indigenous people, Elders and seniors.

“For 35 years M’akola Housing Society has made a real difference in thousands of people’s lives through affordable housing and vital work and educational opportunities through scholarships, bursaries, co-ops and internships,” says Birney. “We are honoured to present this award to an organization that is such a powerful force for change for people and communities.”

Anishinaabe professor, armed forces medic, sustainability consultant and 50 more graduates to receive awards

Royal Roads University will present 64 awards to recognize the remarkable academic achievements of 53 graduates during the ceremonies.

Anishinaabe Doctor of Social Sciences graduate, Dr. Eva Jewell, will receive the Governor General’s Gold Medal for the most outstanding dissertation, thesis, or graduate project for her dissertation exploring her Nation’s interest in a return to traditional governance: Gimaadaasamin, we are accounting for the people: Support for customary governance in Deshkan Ziibiing.

Bachelor of Arts in Justice Studies graduate and medical technician in the Canadian Armed Forces, Warrant Officer Jessica Hewett, will receive the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for Inclusion, Democracy and Reconciliation for her dedication to scholarship, democratic principles and fighting injustice. She will also receive the President’s Scholar Award.

Bachelor of Science in Environmental Practice graduate and sustainability consultant, Thibaut Doix, will receive the Governor General’s Silver Medal for having earned the highest academic standing upon graduation from a bachelor's degree program. He will also receive the Chancellor’s Award and President’s Scholar Award.

Convocation ceremonies

The morning and afternoon ceremonies will take place at the Royal Theatre.

The morning ceremony will honour Faculty of Management and School of Education and Technology graduates at 9:30 a.m.

The afternoon ceremony will honour Faculty of Social and Applied Sciences and College of Interdisciplinary Studies graduates at 2 p.m.

For those who are unable to attend, the ceremonies will be available for viewing live on Royal Roads’ broadcast channel.  

New alumni welcomed at Hatley Castle reception

The graduates of the forty-sixth convocation will join a strong community of 28, 530 Royal Roads University alumni worldwide. New alumni and their friends and family are invited to a reception with faculty and staff Wednesday, Nov. 6 at Hatley Castle from 10 a.m. to noon for the Faculty of Management from and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for the College of Interdisciplinary Studies and the Faculty of Social and Applied Sciences.
