President Steenkamp: Showing our RRU Pride

Today marks the beginning of Pride Week in Victoria — a festival of inclusion and the rich diversity within the 2SLGBTQI+ community. To celebrate, I'm sharing a special video looking back at how we’ve celebrated Pride together on campus over the years.

As a proud member of the 2SLGBTQI+ community, I’m inspired to see how our collective Pride has become more visible over the years, both here at Royal Roads and beyond.

In 2020, I had the incredible honor of raising the Pride flag over Hatley Castle for the first time, starting an annual tradition that I look forward to each year. In 2021, we invited the community to join us to paint three rainbow crosswalks on campus, symbolizing our commitment to inclusion and diversity.

While we have a lot to celebrate, we still have work to do. We need to keep showing up and we need to keep speaking up. Because as RRU Master of Arts in Intercultural and International Communication alum Hostion Ho says, “People need safe spaces more than once a year.” By continuously advocating and creating inclusive environments, we can ensure that everyone feels safe and valued. So let's be joyful, let's march, let's dance and let's keep showing our pride not only this week, but always.
