Mitacs awards fund research, offer valuable experience for students during COVID-19

Motivated by the growing number of students financially affected by COVID-19, Royal Roads University and non-profit research organization Mitacs have launched a new awards competition providing Royal Roads students with paid research training internships.

Up to sixteen undergraduate or graduate students could be eligible for awards of up to $6,000 each, providing them with funding and the opportunity to gain experience and skills through hands-on research and interaction with faculty at Royal Roads.

Students must apply by Monday, Aug. 3, 2020. Email Royal Roads Financial Aid and Awards for an application form.

Vice-President Academic and Provost Bill Holmes says these awards will provide students with valuable experience at a time when many Royal Roads students are reaching out for financial help due to the global pandemic.

“These Mitacs Research Training Awards provide an important vehicle for Royal Roads to support undergraduate and graduate students in the development and application of their research skills in a paid professional work environment,” Holmes says.

Students can opt to focus their internships on projects that are either part of the coursework required for their degree, or can explore different research. Research should be conducted within a 12 to 16 week duration beginning Aug. 31, 2020. Research must be overseen by an academic supervisor at Royal Roads. The award is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international students.
