In March, Royal Roads University will be hosting an event in three parts exploring climate justice in higher education. The feature event will be a book launch, for Dr. Jennie C. Stephens’ new work: Climate Justice and the University: shaping a hopeful future for all, published by John Hopkins University Press.
Visiting from Maynooth University in Ireland, Stephens will discuss key themes of her research. In her new book, Stephens reimagines the powerful potential of higher education to facilitate transformative change to advance human well-being and promote ecological health. Her research explores how powerful actors obstruct transformative climate action, and why financial innovations are essential for a more just, healthy future.
Following Stephens’ presentation, there will be a panel discussion comprised of Royal Roads University professor and Canada Research Chair in Reimagining Capitalism, Dr. Julie MacArthur, RRU Assistant professor in Interdisciplinary Studies, Jasmine Feather Dionne, and University of Victoria faculty member and Executive Director of the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions Dr. Ian Mauro.
The panel will discuss how institutions of higher education hold untapped potential to advance social justice and reduce climate injustices. They will also talk about how universities are not yet structured to accelerate social change for the public good, and what can be done to support this shift.
Whether you’re applying these ideas to university settings or other institutions you are part of, this session promises to dive into complex topics that are both timely and important. A panel discussion and opportunity for questions will follow the book launch.
Expand the afternoon with a tour of The Farm at Royal Roads with Farm and Food Systems Lead, Solara Goldwynn, which will take place just prior to the book launch. Goldwynn will lead participants on an informative tour of the Farm – a food-growing space established in an area that was formerly a lawn. She will also highlight how the project has built community connections, strengthened biodiversity, and increased local food security.
