Mike Dominy

Mike has a long and varied relationship with Royal Roads University. He has been employed at RRU since its inception and prior to that, while he was serving as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, he was an extension student at Royal Roads Military College.

Mike’s career at RRU began in 1995 as a member of the Security and Campus Assistance Department, a position he held for seven and a half years. During that time, he also served as a contract employee working for what was then Conferences and Events as a Site Organizer. Media Support Services soon became aware of Mike’s background as an Audio Visual Technician and was hired as a full time employee to the present day.

The value of this position has allowed Mike first hand contact with almost everyone on Campus, whether it is part of event planning and set up, a casual social encounter or those more stressful times when a calm hand is required to solve a technical issue in a classroom. As a result, Mike can bring knowledge and social commentary from the RRU community to the Role of Staff Representative to the Board of Governors.

It is no secret that Mike’s passion is music, and he has been highly regarded for his leadership skills with musical organizations, not just his technical skills on the podium, but for his organizational and planning skills as well as his ability to problem solve and bring people together to work for a common cause.

Mike also has a strong commitment to RRU, but in his life in the community at large, Mike has assumed leadership roles in a variety of volunteer organizations including Deputy Regional Commissioner for Scouts Canada, and as a member of the Colwood Heritage Commission. He is actively a music director for two volunteer musical organizations.  He also served as Commanding Officer at an Army Cadet Corps.  This has given Mike the opportunity to provide leadership in balancing the interests of multiple stakeholders in serving a common goal.  

Mike’s collective experience provides a unique set of qualifications to better understand the history, relationships and complexities of our roles at RRU and the balance between academic and administrative support that keep RRU functioning.
Mike is looking forward to the collective work of the Board of Governors to navigate future challenges and to enhance, build and maintain relationships with our RRU community.
