The Maria C. Wilkie Hummingbird Bursary aims to honour Maria’s generous spirit by helping women enter, re-enter, or advance in the workforce. Helping them – like a hummingbird – take flight.
Maria acted with grace and elegance in her life, helping others even in the face of adversity. She believed in equality, justice, women’s rights and education, as demonstrated by her career: EB Eddy Forest Products; TimberWest; Maria C. Wilkie Consulting Company; Victoria Symphony Orchestra; BC Ministry of Community, Aboriginal and Women’s Services; BC Ministry of Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Multiculturalism; and the executive team at BC Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation.
Lifelong learning was important to Maria, and she planned to pursue a master’s degree at Royal Roads if time had allowed. This award reflects Maria’s kindness and desire to help women make positive changes in their lives through education.
