Maintenance

Ken Doan is known on the Royal Roads University (RRU) campus as Ken, the maintenance electrician. He is a father of two, married, and believes in a living Higher Power. He does not believe that his past predicts his future and is dedicating the next twenty-plus years of his life to taking on more responsibility, becoming more involved, and volunteering in his community.

Ken grew up in rural central Alberta. After graduating high school, he took advanced courses in college with the goal of attending university. At that time, he married, and drawn by starting a family and the economic boom, he changed his career path to work in the oilfield industry. He eventually started and completed an Electrical trade ticket as an Industrial Electrician, which provided opportunities to work with electrical systems, controls, instrumentation, as well as gain experience in leadership, management, safety, and quality control. He has worked in both construction and service roles.

In January 2020, Ken and his family made another life course change by moving to Vancouver Island to be closer to relatives who had relocated there earlier. He worked as a subcontractor and took on fly-in, fly-out jobs to northern remote sites before joining the Royal Roads University team in 2022.

Ken is interested in serving on the Board of Governors at Royal Roads University for several reasons. Coming from the private sector, he has not previously had the opportunity to participate in the higher-level operations of an institution of this caliber. With his background, he hopes to provide unique insights and be an asset to the Board. He also values the University’s history and is excited about its future.
