Join us in person or online at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 10 as we welcome BC Black History Awareness Society President Silvia Mangue for an engaging discussion in honor of Black History Month. Bring your curiosity and your questions to explore diverse topics on Black histories in Canada. A short presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer period, facilitated by President Philip Steenkamp.

The in-person event will be held in the Sequoia Building's Centre for Dialogue. For online attendees, please register in advance to receive the Zoom link.

Silvia Mangue

Silvia Mangue Alene holds a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Human Resources from Camosun College, a post-graduate diploma in Intercultural Education from the University of Victoria and a Certificate in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion from Cornell University. Now she is pursuing a Master of Arts in Community Development at the University of Victoria. Silvia is the co-founder and president of Kulea Culture Society, which is dedicated to promoting diversity, inclusion and equity in the community through training and cross-cultural events. Silvia is also the president of the BC Black History Awareness Society, which celebrates the achievements of Black people in British Columbia by creating an awareness of the history of Blacks in BC, stimulating interest in the contributions of persons of African ancestry to BC and Canada today, and celebrating historical and contemporary achievements in the arts, education, government, sports, and science. Silvia has worked at the City of Victoria’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion office since June 2021. Silvia’s passions among many others are her two organizations, fitness and wellness. Silvia was born in West Africa’s Equatorial Guinea and grew up in Madrid, Spain. Silvia is a mother of a 22-year-old son, and they live in Victoria BC.
