Most Royal Roads University programs have residency periods ranging from a few days for shorter programs and up to three three-week residencies over a two-year program. Occasionally, leave and time off for continuing education can be an obstacle. Many CAF and DND students take annual leave to cover residency periods. In addition to annual leave there is a provision (CFAO 16-1 Leave) for Officers Commanding a Command (OCC) to grant 30 calendar days special leave in a year for academic advancement. It is understood that a request for this leave cannot be approved nor denied below that level. CAF policy also encourages supervisors to permit time during the work week for learners to pursue academic advancement.
Royal Roads University works closely with the Military Personnel Generation to ensure easy access to CAF & DND education policies.
