Interdisciplinary Studies

Dr. Veronica Gaylie is an educator, scholar-practitioner and writer from Vancouver. Her interdisciplinary work is focused on the fields of climate education, writing and global experience. She has written two books on climate education: The Learning Garden: Ecology, Teaching and Transformation, and Roots and Research in The Urban School Garden (Peter Lang Publishing, New York). Gaylie has twenty years of experience teaching at the post-secondary level and has won two UBC teaching awards. She has been a principal and co-investigator on major collaborative Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council-funded projects focused on environmental education and the narratives of climate change.

Experience

Gaylie is currently a senior scholar on the global team at the International Jesuit Ecology Project, based at Loyola University in Chicago, which is creating the online textbook Healing Earth. The textbook addresses the most pressing environmental issues of our time and challenges students to think deeply about the meaning of the natural world in our lives.  She regularly teaches in rural Kenya and other marginalized indigenous communities now experiencing the impacts of climate change, and she is a Director of the Peace Garden project in Kenya, working with schools to create gardens and teach eco-literacy.
