Cox on effectiveness of emergency sirens

Prof. Robin Cox, head of Royal Roads’ Disaster and Emergency Management program, spoke with CHEK News about the state of Vancouver Island’s emergency notification systems including alerts and sirens.

Here is an excerpt:

"There’s a myth that these kind of things cause panic. I think the establishment of a siren has to be accompanied by education and awareness building so people know what the siren means; they know what to do when it sounds; and they know where to go if it’s around an evacuation from a tsunami. But I think, with that information, a siren is just a mechanism for alerting people and it’s one that has proven itself in multiple jurisdictions.”
